installing Ubunto 8.10 desktop edition

Asked by Max Dumlao

I have Ubunto 8.04 LTS installed on my laptop. Is it safe for me to install Ubuntu 8.10 using the official CD without uninstalling Ubunto 8.04?

Hi,

it is generally safe to upgrade to 8.10 from 8.04

The recommended way to upgrade is via a network connection

If this is not possible (you have no good internet connection), an upgrade using the alternate CD is possible

for more information look at this page : http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading

as the 8.10 version has a newer unix kernel than 8.04 there is a small possibility that you might have some issues with it.
before upgrading you could try to boot with the live CD of 8.10 before upgrading your system to get some extra assurance your hardware is not one of the rare exceptions that experience some problem when upgrading

it is also recommended to have a look at the release notes to see what the known issues (and workarounds if any) are
