Can't upgrade - network problem

Asked by nikhil

Hi,

I am a newbie and am trying to upgrade to 8.1 from (believe it or not) Feisty!
Anyhow, I get the same message as mentioned here (https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/50648) :

"A problem occurred during the update. This is usually some sort of a network problem, please check your network connection and retry.

Below this message there is a bunch of 'Failed to fetch http:/.......'

In ref to the above link I do all that is suggested but I do not follow the dialog after

" marcobra said on 2008-11-08:
Please confirm you are you using a proxy...?
Thank you"

I am not sure what I need to check about the network; what is a proxy? how do I check if I am using one? I am using a wireless connection at home and the internet is working fine.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Nikhil

Feisty has reached its end-of-life on October 19th, 2008 and has now been removed from the normal archives and mirror. The supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 7.04 is via Ubuntu 7.10.
Instructions and caveats for the upgrade may be found at

Thank you for your reply. I am trying to first upgrade to 7.10 and added the repositories mentioned in the link. But I get this message....

"Could not download all repository indexes

The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in the preferences.

Remove all references to http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty/ as this doesn't exist anymore.

I have associated this question to "update-manager" package.

As additional tips, you can click on this launchpad page tabs:

- the "Answers" tab will allow you to see all already answered questions related to this package;
- the "Bugs" will allow you to see the known bugs related to this package.

This might helps you to solve your issue, by the way is a good starting point.

Thanks......seems it may be best to do a fresh install from a live CD.
