Unable to Upgrade 7.04 to 7.10

Asked by Shira P

I am a Linux newbie trying to do my first upgrade. I have tried to over the past few months to update using both apt-get, and update manager. My initial attempt failed due to a know bug, which has since been resolved. Recent attempts got "failed to fetch" errors.
This is the error message I got today:

Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty/main/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.40 80]
Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty/multiverse/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.40 80]
Failed to fetch http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty/universe/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 141.76.2.131 80]
Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty/universe/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.40 80]
Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty/universe/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.40 80]
Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty/multiverse/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.40 80]

After commenting out all 3rd party software from my /ect/apt/sources.list, there were still some fail to fetch errors. I then commented out all the sources that caused the fail to fetch error. Now I receive this error:
Could not calculate the upgrade

A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport.

My /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log is so long now, I didn't want to include it in this post.

I really appreciate any help I receive. I have spent hours online reading, and am no closer to solving the problem.

Thanks for your patience with me, I am quite lost.

Shira

Feisty is not supported any more and has been removed from the repositorys.

Please upgrade your installation.

Hi, thanks for the quick response. I still don't know what to do next. While I know that Feisty is no longer "supported", I thought I should somehow be able to upgrade my 7.4 (Fiesty) to 7.10 (Gutsy). Please explain the steps I must take to upgrade my installation.

In order to upgrade to a newer version of Ubuntu you first have to ensure that your present installation is completely up-to-date. As Fredrik stated, Feisty is no longer supported. Support ended in October 2008.

Ubuntu releases new versions every six months and these have a support life of 18 months. The exceptions are the LTS (Long Term Support) releases which have a 3-year support life. The current LTS release is Hardy Heron 8.04 which you can upgrade to the next LTS release when it becomes available.

In your current situation you will have to do a clean install of either Hardy Heron (8.04) or Intrepid Ibex (8.10). Please note that version 8.10 is not a long term support version and its support will expire in April 2010. Version 8.04 (LTS) will expire in April 2011.
