Update manager

Asked by peter

Hello

I've a question and I would be glad if you can reply. Thanks.

I've started the Update manager. The Update manager told me, that my system is up-to-date. I clicked the Check button and I could install four updates.

Why I do have this difference? Why didn't the start of the manager tell me that I could install four updates? Thanks for your answer.
Peter

To determine whether you system is up-to-date, update-manager checks the version of the packages you are using against the version in its list of the latest packages. If it sees that the version you have is the newest in every case, then it says you are up to date.

When you click the "Check" button, update manager first gets a new list of the latest packages from the ubuntu repository. It then rechecks all your packages using this new list. Thus, it is very likely that when you first start update-manager it is using an old list of packages to check your packages against and thus shows that you are completely up to date until you get the new list of packages from the ubuntu repositories.
