cannot upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10

Asked by Theo vd Broek

I am a quite new linus user. version 7.04.
I made several attempts to upgrade to 7.10
For upgrading to 7.10 the system has to make a mumber op steps as shown in the upgrade screen. The system makes several attempts to download the needed software.
The system keeps hanging in the first step.
The system cannot fetch a number of files. The system says " The problem may be caused by your internet connection." .
I think this is not the reason. I have no problems to go on internet.
Besides downloading and installing new updates is no problem.
I hope you can help me.
Thanks

If you are new to Linux it is probably best to upgrade to 8.10 or 8.4 as 7.10 has less support and you may encounter problems in the future. The reason for your update problem is probably overloaded servers. As ubuntu 8.10 has just come out, many people are trying to get it and this causes the servers to be overwhelmed. I avoided this by waking up at 6am to download it. That may be a bit extream but if you wait a while (a couple of weeks or so) the servers should be functioning as usual.

Hope that helps,

Laurie

Hi,
one has to upgrade from 7.04 [Feisty] over 7.10 [Gutsy] in order of upgrading to 8.04 [Hardy LTS].
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes

It is correct that servers are very busy because of the release of 8.10 [Intrepid]
http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-8.10-desktop
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes
Therefore any upgrade to either one or another version requires patience at the moment.

Another option would be to order via shipit, even it could also require patience, there is a good chance to get it fast, because it'll be delievered within Netherland.
https://shipit.ubuntu.com/

The declaration that 7.10 has less support needs evidence.

Enjoy Ubuntu
