This would indicate a transient issue on the mit mirror. have you tried changing servers in system>administration>software sources?

I have checked the MIT mirror and it works correctly for me at this end using software sources/update manager and apt-get. everything is working correctly so I am going to convert this into a question, if you continue to have problems please respond to the question and someone will help you get it sorted out.

I would recommend opening a System Menu, Administration, Software Sources and then choosing "Other" from the "Download From" list.
Click on the "Best Server" button.

This will choose the best server for your location and will change where you get your updates from.

The open a terminal window (Applications menu, Accessories) and type the following

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

If this gives any errors try

sudo dpkg --configure -a

or

sudo apt-get install -f

Can you help with this problem?
