Update Manager Hangs?

Using Ubuntu 8.04, update-manager 1:0.87.24

Had 24 updates for a total of 14 mb's. It's been updating for 6 hours now. Can't close. Any ideas? I'm new user so wondering if this is normal and if not, looking for any or all ideas.

If it was Windows, I would just do a turn off the machine and perform a hard reboot but figured there may be a more eloquent way out of this.

worth a try:...I too am a new user of Ubuntu but have had similar problems
to add a force quit option on panel: move mouse to menu panel...right click and add the "force Quit" option
then go to system .. change software source in administration... software sources.. get this to find the best mirror site for you... I found the main Australian one was slow and hung sometimes so went to internode... no worries now and is fast. I am slowly switching to Ubuntu from XP so I know what you mean...
