Software Updater Crash August 28, 2015

Both the updater and the update notifier crashed during the most recent update (August 28 or 29). How can I restore these functions?

I submitted a crash report at the time, but cannot be sure it was actually sent

This sytem is running Ubuntu 14.04 on an HP Pavilion laptop with AMD A8 processor.

It was non-responsive today (left powered up after updater crash), but restarted and rebooted by using the power button on the computer.

Please provide the output of the following commands:

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
sudo dpkg --audit
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
