when i start upgrading ubuntu it gives an upgrade failure error "This can be caused by: * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu"

This can be caused by:

please tell me how to upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04

If you boot to the 12.04 media you should be offered the upgrade.

I'd personally suggest that you wipe Lucid off and do a clean install of Trusty. Trusty is LTS and supported til April 2019
