Update Manager silently crashes, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Asked by EVC

Hello,

I've just purchased this brand new notebook with Ubuntu and tried to install some software on it.

After installation of Wine was 80% of 'applying changes', it stalled for hours, with no means to cancel or force to restart it.

So I've pressed 'upgrade' to 14.X in Update Manager, which after a while told me that it can't continue to install 604 updates it wishes to, because of some problem with its files.

After that, I never managed to make it start, no matter what I do.

When I start it, it just blinks for a few seconds, and nothing else happens.

I've reinstalled it several times, did apt-get updates, apt-get install -f, apt-get dist-upgrade several times, rebooted several times all in same and different orders, but nothing changes.

During those apt-gets bug reporter told me about several system errors, which it should have probably sent somewhere, but later on it crashed, too.

I'd appreciate any helpful suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

And if you run:

sudo apt-get upgrade; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Does it install ok?

I'm not sure if that helps, but it seem to have had some problems installing language support in the past, and right now non-english language support reports to be installed, but do not appear in the settings list, with language order - I only have a long list of english versions in there ever since I've applied to set language support system-wide.

If that is even related to the main problem.

In any case, reinstalling language support made no difference to these error messages or its behaviour.

After that apt-gets gave me 1 same as before error message, and, unfortunately, Update Manager's behaviour has not changed.

May be I should install/reinstall something else, too?

How do I remove those overlapping packages?

I do not understand how that happend that they are there, so probably can not supply any more additional information for a bug report.

Or you mean I should just press 'Create bug report' in this very window?

And so did I.

Thanks for you help!

Do you think there is anything else I can do about it, or should I now sit and wait for the developers to respond to the bug report I just created?

Right now I'm rather stuck with this situation where I can not update, can not install new software, since it hangs every so often in Ubuntu Software Center when 'applying changes', and not certain about the state of my language package. :(

Heh... wanted to gift this notebook to my parents for the New Year, and forget of all those winlockers etc they get every other week :(

What is now the output of the terminal commands

If you open system-settings and navigate to language setup, is there a warning like "language setup incomplete"?

The last two currently can not be completed, will have to reboot, since dpkg is locked by Software Center, which is 'applying changes' forever.

There were several times after initial setup, it told me all the time that it wants to setup english language support, but after several such installations it is in the current state - only variants of English are available in the language support opening screen, no matter what languages I install or remove.

^^^ here it hangs up

I have run the commands from the page you suggested one-by one, and as a batch.

Output above is from the batch, obviously.

But, unfortunately, the results are the same - the process hangs up 'Downloading Dropbox 100%'.

I guess that it should probably try to install that Dropbox after downloading, and hang up because either Update Manager is nonfunctional, or because Software Center since yesterday is nonfunctional, too, as it auto starts and can not ever finish 'searching....' task every time it is run, which I never asked it to 'install' or whatever it is trying to do with that task.

The dropbox problem is known.

Adam Orwell (anopenid6045) said on 2012-06-23: #16

Seems like a lot of people are having this problem, and the original workaround left some information out, so here's an updated version.

Updated workaround procedure:

 - Download the Dropbox .deb file from: https://www.dropbox.com/install?os=lnx
 - Open the .deb with Ubuntu Software Center and begin installation
 - When you see the screen saying "To complete installation, you must start Dropbox", press CANCEL
 - Install the dropbox daemon (nautilus-dropbox) using one of these commands (from https://www.dropbox.com/install?os=lnx):
       For 32-bit operating systems:
             cd ~ && wget -O - "https://www.dropbox.com/download?plat=lnx.x86" | tar xzf -
       For 64-bit operating systems:
             cd ~ && wget -O - "https://www.dropbox.com/download?plat=lnx.x86_64" | tar xzf -
 - Start the dropbox daemon with this command:
       ~/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd
 - Restart computer

++++++++++

1. kill the stalled dropbox install process

sudo fuser -vvv -k /var/lib/dpkg/lock
sudo fuser -vvv -k /var/cache/apt/archives/lock

2. remove the failing package

sudo dpkg --purge nautilus-dropbox

If you want to have dropbox installed, proceed with the instructions above.

Finally execute

LANG=C sudo apt-get upgrade
LANG=C sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

and copy/paste the output.

I assume that update-manager should be working again. In the moment I do not see the need for another run of the troubleshooting procedure. Pease try starting update-manager and software-center (not at the same time of course!) and report whether they now work again.

Next decision: Do you want to install dropbox? Don't try doing that from the Ubuntu repositories, but use the procedure described in my previous posting:

 - Download the Dropbox .deb file from: https://www.dropbox.com/install?os=lnx
 - Open the .deb with Ubuntu Software Center and begin installation
 - When you see the screen saying "To complete installation, you must start Dropbox", press CANCEL
 - Install the dropbox daemon (nautilus-dropbox) using the command:
              cd ~ && wget -O - "https://www.dropbox.com/download?plat=lnx.x86_64" | tar xzf -
 - Start the dropbox daemon with this command:
        ~/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd
 - Restart computer

Had to create a batch and redirect the output into a file, since this initially exceeded terminal window capacity, so this is actually 2nd successful run of the commands in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure.

Hope that helps. Since right now I do not understand most of what I'm doing :).

Unfortunately, Update Manager still would not start.

What would you suggest me to do next?

Dropbox is not high priority for me, before I'd be able to make the core update components running smoothly.

Software Center seems to be released from lock, but Update Manager is still in the same strange state - it just would not start.

But seeing your comment, I have not restarted or reinstalled Update Manager yet.

Should I do it?

Or may be there should be some kind of log that Update Manager should be creating, where it should explain what's going on with it?

Are there any error messages shown in the terminal?

Reinstalling language packs and/or Update Manager does not change anything either, I get the same error.

For me, the culprit might be 'english' that the system thought was incorrectly installed and was trying to reinstall several times when I was running language settings.

I can guess that since only english is present in settings even if I install/remove/install/reboot/install/remove/reboot other languages, but the GUI is not in english even if I kill all the other language packs.

The system seem to be stuck with corrupt installation of the first language pack, that initially went wrong, but after restarting the system after that malfunctioned installation, it correctly shown other than english GUI options, and I was able to install non-english GUI language, which, probably, now is in a somewhat orphaned language pack, that the system uses partly, but would not show up anywhere.

Might that be the reason of the error?

Any ideas how to correct it?

Even if something went wrong with the language pack installation, it should be possible to get it repaired.

Please provide the output of the following terminal commands:

locale
sudo locale-gen en_US.UTF-8
sudo locale-gen ru_RU.UTF-8
cat /etc/default/locale

If you want to have Russian as your language, try
sudo update-locale LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8
or if you want English,
sudo update-locale LANG=en_US.UTF-8

And then again
cat /etc/default/locale

Thus, it seems to me that both locale settings are broken, as expected.

And probably that is the core reason of all the problems mentioned above.

Odd part is that it was broken from the very beginning, since locale settings was the fisrt thing I changed, and uncalibrated battery died in the process.

But everything seemed OK untill about a day after.

How do I restore locale settings back to normal?

The very last setting of /etc/default/locale seems normal (for US English).

Re-try

update-manager
locale
sudo locale-gen en_US.UTF-8
sudo locale-gen ru_RU.UTF-8
sudo update-locale LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8
sudo update-locale LANG=en_US.UTF-8

and copy/paste all output.

I just re-checked update-manager, and I assume that the cause for update-manager crashing is the broken locale setting, and it makes sense to focus on that one.

I propose to try reinstalling the packages related to locale definition and setting

LANG=C sudo apt-get update
LANG=C sudo apt-get install --reinstall libc-bin locales
LANG=C sudo locale-gen en_US.UTF-8
LANG=C sudo locale-gen ru_RU.UTF-8
LANG=C sudo update-locale LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8
LANG=C sudo update-locale LANG=en_US.UTF-8
locale
cat /etc/default/locale

Please copy/paste all output as done before.

Feels like something is still amiss, no?

At least I still see errors and russian still do not appear on the first screen of language settings.

Feels kinda odd - what could have I done to the system to make something as simple as language support to go so terribly wrong.

Anyway, thanks much for your help!

This sure is very helpful experience for me, that I'd not have gotten in any other way, and it will help me alot in the future working with Linux.

What would you suggest me to do next with this locale problem?

It seems the root cause is hidden in

ru_RU.UTF-8... /usr/sbin/locale-gen: line 243: 3996 Segmentation fault (core dumped) localedef $no_archive -i $input -c -f $charset $locale_alias $locale
failed

What is the output of

sudo bash -x /usr/sbin/locale-gen

And please provide also the output of the terminal commands

cat /var/lib/locales/supported.d/*
ls -l /usr/lib/locale/*
ls -l /var/lib/belocs
ls -l /usr/lib/locale/locale-archive
localedef --list-archive

Sorry to say, but I am running out of ideas.
I think I have traced the problem down to the program "localedef -i ru_RU -c -f UTF-8 ru_RU.UTF-8" crashing with segfault, but I am not able to see the root cause.

Maybe somebody else can help.

Thank you very, very much for you time and effort - that was very helpful indeed, I appreciate it!

Lets hope someone will find out what still has to be done to get it back in working state :(

I ended up uninstalling every language, including all the extra 'English'es.

After that I still had the problem.

But after running this for every language I installed back:

localedef ru_RU.UTF-8 -i ru_RU -f UTF-8

I was able to run Update-Manager.

And, out of desperation, upgraded to 14.04 with it.

Even so I had several errors of Ubuntu packages telling me for some reason they do not like my Ubuntu version, including WiFi module, which previously was not working either due to the same locale problem, I got everything (it seems) up and running, finally.

So, after a short couple of weeks, the problem was finally solved, along with other oddities of 12.04, which I have not reported, including, but not limited to, nonworking WiFi and malfunctioned non-English interfaces, much to my surprise.
