Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale

Asked by MadhuSoodanan

Months ago I had asked about Setting of 'locale' (in Qn 202428). The problem is not solved yet. Read http://askubuntu.com/questions/2855/locale-reset-lost-settings
But didn't try anything. Which one should I try. I am using 12.04 LTS.

locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory

The package manager troubleshooting procedure shows that there apparently was some minor problem, and it was able to solve it. As far as I can see, the package management system now is in a consistent state.

Now try the terminal commands

sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales
locale

and copy/paste all output into this question document as done before.

It seems everything is OK. But still wish to know it from you. If OK, can I enable the other softwares now? Can I change the server?

Your last post shows that LC_ALL is still not set.

You might try using the system language settings dialogue to switch your default language to plain English (or UK English), close the dialogue, open it again and set back to English (India).

Please provide the output of the terminal command
cat /etc/environment

Don't know where I can find system language settings dialogue
Need I do anything in the System setup before booting?

This is the output ( without doing anything ):
madhu@madhu-desktop:~$ cat /etc/environment
PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games"
madhu@madhu-desktop:~$

It depends on the Ubuntu version and the desktop environment in use, where to find the system settings dialogue.

By clicking in the "gear" icon in the top right corner of the screen you should see an entry "System settings".
Or just search for "system settings" in the dash (if you are using the desktop with the dash)
Or use the menu Applications - system Tools - ... (if you are using the desktop with the menu)

I am using 12.04 LTS. So I have Dash Home. When I clicked on Language Support, the following pop-up window appeared:
----------------------------------------------------------
The language support is not installed completely
Some translations or writing aids available for your chosen languages are not installed yet. Do you want to install them now?

DETAILS:

Since I couldn't find anything in 'in' (as India's) and to avoid further problems I didn't install anything. Need I install all these items?

Yes, I think you should install all these proposed packages. Even if they do not provide English as spoken/written in India, they make sure that British English is available as fallback for any items that are missing in English for India.

A jerking only .... when I clicked on Apply System-Wide. No Authentication needed to change to this Regional language. So I am not sure whether it has been changed or not.

For testing, I tried to select another language from REGIONAL FORMATS...Clicked on APPLY SYSTEM-WIDE...Then I was asked to enter password to authenticate. But I didn't enter it to switch over to that one. Can I use any terminal command? Or Need I report this as a bug?

I have not seen any warning or error messages in your output any more. LANG and LANGUAGE are defined now. LC_ALL is not set on all system, so this can be ok on your system.

You have to be aware that whenever you provide your password for an admin action, this is temporarily store and you will not be asked again for the next ten minutes. Maybe this was the case also in the situation above.

So in the moment I do not see anything wrong.
Do you see more problems on your system? If yes, please provide details.

As you said I COULDN'T SEE ANYTHING WRONG this time after the change of Regional language. The following three lines in the Update Manager has disappeared when I updated today.

locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory

I shall post if there is any problem in the next Updating.

Thanks a lot, Manfred Hampl for treating this chronic disease.
