no explanation of what will be updated when update manager pops up

Asked by geonel

I have my ubuntu server set up to ask me when to update things, ie; the "Updated software is avail...." box pops up. Lately, this is the second time, it has popped up but there isn't anything listed to update. All it says is that 1.7mb will be downloaded. I like to see the explanations of what I'm updating because I'm a nervous sort of person. My question is: is this ok or is something a muck?

Well, I don't use the update-manager at all, I usually use the terminal for my updates. There you will see a list of what packages will be updated , but not a detailed explanation.

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Also you can use the Synaptic Package Manager, I think it has a detailed explanation box of what will be updated.

    sudo apt-get install synaptic

Sorry that I didn't answer your Original Question about update-manager, but I gave you alternatives.

Thank you for the alternative suggestions. I was aware of them and have used them. Alternates do not at all address the question, not even close. The question was, reworded, is it strange that there is nothing listed when the update manager pops up and says there are updates available? There was not even a hint in the original question that I was looking for an alternative.

I don't know if this will help but I have been experiencing the same problem until the last update of he upeater when it went away. Perhaps the maintainer of the updater could address the issue?

No need to be aggressive. I know, I read the question before I answer. I gave you alternatives to workaround the problem.

And I guess that this is not a problem at all. Probably you were one of the users (who selected randomly) for phasing updates.
Phasing updates have no explanation about what will be updated.

Better for you would be to communicate with the update-manager maintainers to clear up.
