11.04 is not supported any more - hasn't been since 28 October 2012.
My personal recommendation would be to backup then do a clean install
I suggest you backup then do a clean install with either
Ubuntu http://
Xubuntu http://
or Lubuntu http://
All 3 are supported You may want to try them all from a live CD or USB stick first then install the one you prefer.
Ubuntu 12.04 needs a reasonably powerful PC so on older hardware Xubuntu or Lubuntu may be prefered.
If you want to upgrade you will need to go from 11.04 to 11.10 which is also not supported then to 12.04 and finally 12.10
Clean install will be easier but see here
Id go for a clean install. As Warren states you will need to sequentially upgrade to each release in turn.
Can you help with this problem?
