Update-manager fails with partial upgrade, for the last week

Asked by Hamish McIntyre-Bhatty

My ubuntu version is 12.04 LTS with (at the time) the latest updates on x86 architecture on a Acer Emachines er1401.
Update manager fails while calculating the upgrade with ubuntu-desktop being marked for removal, but is also on the removal blacklist (as it's a core ubuntu package). Using "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade", the issue appears to have been resolved.

lsb_release -a gives:

No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS
Release: 12.04
Codename: precise

Thanks

I apoligize. The issue has now been resolved, and beside, the computer is regularly cleaned of old packages anyway. If you know a solution anyway, it may be helpful for future reference
