Update Manager tells me I have 489 updates available but I can't download them!

I am using 11.10 on my netbook, and keep getting the message that I have 489 updates available. When I try to download them I keep getting the message that the downloads have failed due to problems with my internet connection. However when I check the internet signal strength it seems that I have a fairly strong internet connection. I have tried all the usual tricks, ie sitting near the window or using the dongle with its usb lead but nothing works. Help!

Oneiric has less than one month support left. After which there will be zero support and zero updates. I recommend a clean install of Precise. It is LTS and supported til April 2017. I wouldn't waste and more time on Oneiric
