what if you run it from terminal by typing:

firefox

what is output?

david (zaanta) said : #2

tks andrew....I'm afraid I'm a complete newbie to ubuntu & don't know what you mean. Could you indulge me & be a bit more specific?
david

press CTRL+ALT+T and run the command. what happens? is there any output?

david (zaanta) said : #4

ok - sorry for the dealy but of course I have to restart each time!
so I get the same message: "problem loading page............cannot find start.ubuntu" etc

if you run:

ping 8.8.8.8 -c 4

do you get replies?

david (zaanta) said : #6

gm Andrew!
sorry - last night too tired to continue :)
so - I just tried your command & I got a lot of stuff but
"destination net unreachable" was what I really only understood!
What next? It's a real shame as I want so much to switch completely to ubuntu but I need the net access of course
anyway thanks again for your time & help,
david

Your issue isn't Firefox. You have no web access.

david (zaanta) said : #8

But I get the message that I have!!
Both my wlan is said to be connected and when I check the connection status it shows my ethernet also as connected???

Warren Hill (warren-hill) said : #9

You say you are rebooting. Does this mean you are dual booting between Ubuntu and another OS - Windows for example?

If yes and the other OS is windows then click the start button and type

cmd

In the window that opens run

ipconfig /all

post all the results back here. Now reboot in Ubuntu press CTRL+ALT+T to get a teminal and enter

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
lsb_release -a; lshw -C network; cat /etc/network/interfaces; ifconfig; route -n
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Post all the results back here. Note you can save the output to a text file on a USB stick then reboot to the other OS and copy and paste.

If you are not dual booting then just do the Ubuntu bit

many thanks - much appreciated,

Are you using a 3G dongle for internet access?

david (zaanta) said : #13

ha-ha...I have no idea what that is lol
I have AVM wlan & a normal cable dsl
I'm not sure but I thiink I read somewhere that there can be a problem with the AVM but...the funny thing is that as soon as I start ubuntu up it flashes me with "WLAN 78 CONNECTED"?????????
hope this helps..............................

Warren Hill (warren-hill) said : #14

You have two connections: A wireless LAN and a DSL connection. This is not the normal set-up. Most people just have the wireless and the router makes an internet connection for them. I am assuming that you do not have an internet connection via the wireless LAN but only via the DSL. I have little experience with DSL set-up but it looks easy in most cases take a look here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dx-G-Sn6IhY

If this does not work can you let us know

1. Make and model of DSL modem
2. Your ISP
3. Output of the following command in a terminal (assuming DSL modem is connected via USB)

-----------------------------------------
lsusb
-----------------------------------------

david (zaanta) said : #15

OK, Warren, I don't even WANT to know what happened BUT.....I'm writing this from my ubuntu os!!!!
I did nothing different than usual! Before I went to type in your latest Terminal command I thought I'd just check again to click Firefox & guess what? Here I am.......a very happy man :)
Now it's just fingers crossed that when I get up the nerve to do the complete switch from w7 I'm able to connect!!! As I don't have another computer it would be really tough to ask for help!

Anyway, thank you so much for your time, patience & help.......much appreciated!
