Computer shut down during an update

Asked by derek kattner

My computer shut down in the middle of updating to the latest Ubuntu software. Now when I turn on my computer it only stays on for a few seconds before the screen goes black. Computer still runs but can't see anything on the screen including the curser. If I try to log into safe mode it will try to load for a few seconds then the screen goes black again and restarts. If I try loading Ubuntu, the screen again goes black then the Ubuntu symbol pops on the screen for a split second then goes black again. I can't really do anything on my computer as it is now and I have no idea what to try. Any ideas for me would be appreciated or if you think my computer is done for. Thank you.

I would suggest reinstalling ubuntu from a liveCD, if you can't even get recovery mode then that seems like the only option.

Do not try the safe mode (if by that you mean the low graphics , Failsafe X) ..

Press the [Recovery Mode] and from the menu , select the NETWORK (you must have an Ethernet cable connected) to initialize the network.

Then select the other option "Dpkg - Fix Broken Packages" ... and let it finish..

At the end , just reboot to see if fixed.

Thank you.
