i'm using natty narwal but keep getting a message saying it is no longer supported. can someone suggest the best download to try

I'm using natty narwal but want to try a newer version. can I download a newer version and do a direct install or do i have to go through the whole update through update manager? Yes.. I am a complete novice , and a dinosaur.

I recommend a clean install of Precise, wiping out Natty. This will give support til April 2017. You can restore user data from backups.
