Update manager not working

I get the following error message when I attempt to update my system:

Could not initialize the package information

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_universe_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

How do I fix this?

Hi ,

Close all programs and open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy from here and paste to terminal, bellow commands one at time :

1) sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*

2) sudo apt-get update

3) sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I'm almost certain , problem solved.
