damaged packages during upgrade Ubuntu

Asked by robert bruner

I have an Acer netbook in which I now have dual-booted XP and Ubuntu which is now up to kernel 2.6.32-42. During the last time I updated both OSs, the Ubuntu gave me a notice that the 12.0 version was now available. I tried to download and install said OS and it soon gave me notice of problems and tried a partial upgrade-failure. I tried more upgrading at later times, still no luck. The current install of Ubuntu works fine but any upgrading for the current system drops me into the 12.0 upgrade cycle. I put Ubuntu on just for playing around and have no needful data could be done. The main worry I have is that when I first put Ubuntu on a couple years ago, I could not access the XP partition to boot up and had to reinstall from scratch. Thankfully there was nothing important on XP and, when reinstalled, got a perfect bootup choice which has worked fine.
My question is: which would be simpler, trying to work through fixing the current Ubuntu or do a reinstall of the new OS? I also have disc image backups of the whole HDD I could revert back to (6 wk. old) but I would still face potentially the same problem when I try to upgrade the Ubuntu. I am a newbie in Ubuntu so anything using the command line would have to be step-by step. A fresh install worries me due to the boot problem stated above. What to do. Thanks.

If you boot to the Precise CD, it should offer you an upgrade

Sounds interesting. What is the Precise CD, the new Ubuntu distro?

Ubuntu is the distro. Precise is the next LTS release you can upgrade to in one jump.

OK. When it boots up, will it sense the Ubuntu partition and offer to install to that partition?
