Upgrading XP/10.04 to XP/12.04 adding separate home folder

Asked by Harry Page

10.04 is in a Container for Logical Partitions /dev/sda4 (149 GB). This Container includes /dev/sda6 Linux swap (6.1 GB). Also /dev/sda5 ext4 mounted at / (143 GB). Using CD installer for 12.04 would it be OK to format /dev/sda5 and then reduce it in size to 15GB? Then add new /dev/sda7 ext4 at /home (128 GB)? And then install 12.04? (home folders already backed up). Thanks in advance.

Sure, if you just delete the logical partitions (This will destroy any data so be sure your backups are up to date), then repartition as you desire. Remeber to use the 'Something else' option in the installer and set the mount points to each partition. Swap will not need a mount point, set the file systems to Ext4. You will need about 1Gb for /, 1.1xRAM for swap (I assume more than 2Gb RAM) and the rest for /home
