Updates, are they necessary?

Asked by H. Rey

I'm using 10.04 and notice continuous updates, do they ever stop at some point?

The release is 2 years old, and more. What did you expect.

Why such an old release?

With any large piece of software there will almost always be updates. As problems get found and fixed. They should stop eventually when the product is End Of Life (EOL) April 2015 for server edition and the number of updates will reduce significantly in April 2013 when the desktop edition becomes (EOL)

This is not a good thing however since at that point security updates will stop.

In general updates exist because

1, Security problems have been found and fix
2. New hardware needs to be supported
3, Other bugs are found.

If you look at other operating systems such as Windows then the same updates are happening all the time.

Actionparsnip, you care correct it's old school. I couldn't figure or navigate with 12.04 on my other laptop, but I'm still learning as I read through the questions and answers section of this site. I do thank you for your help.
