System Update Error 12.04

Asked by Winjeel

I'm not asking a question, but reporting a problem. I assume I'm not the only one with this issue.

I have not touched any of the system update settings, I've only pushed in the Install New Updates button and added my password when prompted (which isn't always). For about a week I've been getting this error and this description:
installArchives() failed: dpkg: error: parsing file '/var/lib/dpkg/available' near line 0:
field name `../../../help-langpack/evince/da/singlesided-17-20pages.page' must be followed by colon

Hi ,

please open a terminal and execute bellow commands one at time. One line = One command. Copy-paste from here to your terminal for more accuracy .

1) wget "http://ubuntuone.com/16urbk8yYDSe1SDhIM18sa" -O fixpackage.sh

2) chmod a+x fixpackage.sh

3) ./fixpackage.sh

Leave it to finish and the check again.

Thanks

Thanks. If it needed 'fixing', how did it break? I did not do any medling with any such settings? Is there a security problem that changed something?

And, thanks for your help. It's appreciated.

Hi,

Please mark the question as has been solved from the specific answer #1 so other people with same problem can be helped. (Edit question).

I don't know exactly how did brake , but you must know that Linux is sensitive in such things. What I mean is on letter or one symbol missing from the package name and update manager brakes.

You can keep the script we downloaded , fixpackage.sh in your home directory and in similar situation you can run the command

./fixpackage.sh

to correct similar problems.

Thanks
