Ubuntu will not update.
I am running Ubuntu 11.10 . The update manager is trying to update to the lasest version. I need the latest version as it supports the USB wireless adapter I have.
The update manager has tried several times to update and failed
When I try to update it states that previous updates have failed and it will try a partial update
This then also fails stating "failed authenticating some parcels continue?"
It does not allow me to continue and the update fails.
I have followed instructions on several other blogs and forums and these have all failed to help.
I have changed the update settings, so that all option are now ticked in the Ubuntu software tab except for source code.
I have tried several other things. Unfortunatly I have not documented what I have tried.
Are there any suggestions for how I can allow the update to go ahead?

Can you give the output of:
sudo apt-get update; lsb_release -a; sudo apt-get clean
Thanks

Another option:
Have you considered a Backup followed by a fresh install?
The update from 11.10 to 12.04 should work cleanly and I'm sure the answers to Actionpasrnips's questions will help us work out why its not working but a fresh install may be easier.

sam@FamilyPC:~$ lsb_release-a
lsb_release-a: command not found
sam@FamilyPC:~$ sudo apt-get clean

sam@FamilyPC:~$
I could backup and then re-install from scratch, I just read on several forums this was qujte drastic and should be avoided unless yuo had a really bad problem. I take it all of my settings and installed programs would be re-installed from the back up?
Thanks for the help so far.

I suggest you run:
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/
comment out the top 3 lines and save the new file. Close gedit and run:

sudo cp -arf /var/lib/dpkg /var/lib/

I have got as far as
LANG=C;sudo apt-get update -o APT::Cache-
This ran for a while and then came up with the following error message:
Fetched 29.7 MB in 34s (850 kB/s)
E: Dynamic MMap ran out of room. Please increase the size of APT::Cache-Limit. Current value: 25165824. (man 5 apt.conf)

E: Error occurred while processing pnm2ppa (NewVersion1)

sam@FamilyPC:~$
Should I now continue or should something different now be done given the error?

Sorry I don't understand what you mean by the question about precise sources. I installed Ubuntu from a USB stick onto this computer just a few months ago and have not changed the OS in any way as far as I know, unless installing other software effects it in some way.

Your package system is looking at bot Precise and Oneiric which will cause issues. Once we get this mess straightened out we can build up but right now this is a right mess

Details below.
Would it just be simpler to re-install from scratch?

Thanks for the help the update software ran a treat, no problems.
Ubuntu is happy it is up to date, however in my system info I have Ubuntu 11.10. I presumed the update would update me to the latest version which I thought was 12.04, is this not the case?
