Upgrading 10.04 with separate home partition to 12.04 via live CD

Asked by Harry Page

I have a computer double-booted with 10.04 and Windows 7. 10.04 is in a container for logical partitions, dev/sda4. In this is dev/sda5, root, mounted at /. Also dev/sda6, linux swap. Also dev/sda7, mounted as /home.

Using the installer on the live CD, will it be OK to "Specify partitions manually", then when current set-up appears, "Forward"? Or should I do something else to make sure that 12.04 is installed in root, mounted at /?

Thanks in advance.

You need to mark the old / partition to be used, set to Ext4 and formatted. Set the previous /home partition as /home in whatever file system you used before and NOT formatted. If you do not do this, the system doesn't know where to nstall the OS.
