system crashed during Ubuntu upgrade 11.10 to 12.04.

system crashed during upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04 using the update mgr. Now getting the following error message when
booting to ubuntu.
WARNING **: Command line `dbus-launch --autolaunch=7d752e6982d78d1e9f85444e4bc3452a --binary-syntax --close-stderr' exited with non-zero exit status 1: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.\n

You may want to chroot from a liveCD and run:

sudo fuser -vki /var/lib/dpkg/lock;sudo dpkg --configure -a

Can I use my original cd version 8.04 1386? My pc has a partion with
Windows XP, and I am new user to ubuntu,

You don't need any CD, it's a command for the booted OS

ok. can you give me each step to run this then I can paste the output? I started using Ubuntu in dec when my microsoft xp crashed but have not needed to fix anything after upgrading. Please help I really like using Ubuntu.
