Update Manager won't install updates

Asked by Colm Armstrong

Hi, in Update Manager there is a package under Other Updates described as Apply a diff file to an original. Even if I deselect it the error 'Requires installation of untrusted packages.' comes up. None of the updates in the list get installed.

Below is the description of the package blocking the updates. It also says it is from a source that does not support changelogs.

'Patch will take a patch file containing any of the four forms of difference listing produced by the diff program and apply those differences to an original file, producing a patched version.'

Hi ,
maybe this is a package from an external repository you added ?

Can you please provide some more info ?
Open a terminal and post back the results of
===========================
cat /etc/lsb-release && uname -r
ls /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
===========================

If this is a package update from an external repository then maybe you must delete this specific repository and problem will gone.

See the repositories with
===============================
gksudo software-properties-gtk
===============================
go to "Other Software" to examine the PPAs.
Thanks

Hi NikTH, thanks for your response. The terminal output is below. I haven't intentionally added any external repositories.

tony@tonyV:~$ cat /etc/lsb-release && uname -r
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=12.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=precise
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 12.04 LTS"
3.2.0-29-generic
tony@tonyV:~$ ls /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
oneiric-partner.list oneiric-partner.list.distUpgrade

Hi actionparsnip, I tried the commands you suggested a few times. They didn't solve the problem.

A few days ago the OS reported it had detected a problem with a system program. I'm guessing it was Update Manager. It sent an error report, after asking for my Admin password.

Today, I had a very bad crash. The screen flickered a lot opening different windows. Within a few seconds the OS recovered. I looked at the error report. It said Compiz encountered an error.

I had being planning a fresh reinstall of Ubuntu anyway. So went ahead with it today. Everything is running smoothly. I have a nice fresh OS now.

The problem is solved now. Possibly in the past I downloaded an application that led to the Update Manager problem.
