My friends Computers are annoyingly obsolete

Asked by Craig Denney

When I update my Computer with 'Update Manager,' sometimes it shows a distribution upgrade and I've been trying to encourage my friends onto Ubuntu, but it's currently difficult because Ubuntu says any 'old' Computer will run the distributions.

The problums I've had.

It would make life a lot easier if 'Update Manager' had all of the distribution upgrades back to at least 9.04

And if you could do it maybe Xubuntu because my friends Computers are annoyingly obsolete.

I suggest a clean install. To upgrade from 9.04 you will need to upgrade to 9.10 then to 10.04 then to 12.04. This is a lot of downloading and may give a shaky OS (all the old files from the old releases). A clean install will make the OS as intended (no fluff) as well as getting to the latest release faster. You can restore user data from backup or, if you have a separate /home partition, simply mark that to not be formatted and mounted again.

But it is still a lot of hassle!

Have you seen this new program? Ninite has a Linux page (http://ninite.com/linux/) and would it not be better to basically have the option of installing what ever you want?

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Craig Denney for more information if necessary.
