I need help upgrading from 9.04 to the latest 12.04 ubuntu release

Im having issues with upgrading my 9.04 to 12.04. i tried my update manager and it seems not to work. Can someone please help me with this issue as i want to upgrade ASAP! Im very new to this all so please no one judge me haha :)

You will need to first upgrade to 9.10 then to 10.04 then to 12.04. You can upgrade 10.04 to 12.04 as they are both LTS releases. This will all take a lonnnnnnng time and lots of downloading. Alternatively you can simply wipe out Jaunty and reinstall with a clean install of Precise then restore your user data from backup. This will not only get you to Precise faster but the OS will be cleaner (no stuff from the old releases) as well as giving fewer issues.

Okay, im considering wiping the pc rather instead of the whole downloading. Now do i download the ISO image onto a flash, do a boot up from a USB and wipe Jaunty completely with the help of disc partitioning and install Precise? obviously all after the backup?

Yes, you can use dd to put the ISO on the USB if you do not have a USB boot creator installed (or use a Windows OS). Remember to MD5 test the ISO you download:
