Upgrading Ubuntu from 8.04 to current on Dell mini Inspiron 9/10

Asked by ed209A

I have a question regarding upgrading to 8.04 to current Ubuntu on the Dell Mini Inspiron:

1) After reading that the Intel Atom chip set is compatible with the regular Unbuntu updates (versus the Dellbuntu flavor),
do I need to back up any documents before I wipe out 8.04 to the current Ubuntu?

2) Will the Dell apps that came with it, (i.e WebCam, OpenOffice, etc) still work with the new Ubuntu? (I heard that 11.04 that there was no problem). Or will it be OK? Should I just use an external drive and back up the entire drive?

Thanks

You will need to upgrade to Lucid first, then to Precise;

LTS -> LTS -> LTS

The apps should still work.

Can you help with this problem?
