Before you go any further, please make sure any data you require is safely backed up. You may well have an unstabler system.

Lucid is a very out of date version now. Precise Pangolin - 12.04 is current. Why not download the current live-DVD and try it before attempting to upgrade or install?

I'd go for a clean install too. if you grab the Lucid alternate ISO, you can mount it then run the upgrader that way and get to Lucid. You can then even upgrade to Precise if you desire but a clean install of Precise may be the way to go.

You need to boot from the CD, not try and run it from within Ubuntu. Make sure your backups are up to date.

Excuse me , but am a bit confuse .. lemme git this right :

You have a bootable Ubuntu 12.04 USB stick .. what do you mean by " the rest on cd " do you mean your backup!

to boot the usb either change the boot order from BIOS or hit an F9-12 key .. depends on you machine the BIOS screen should point to you which F-key for boot order .. then select USB , that will boot straight to the LiveCD .

if you wanna upgrade , change back your source list to karmic to upgrade > lucid.

also , make sure the release type from Update-Manager > Settings .. and see if its se to normal release , then check and install all available updates before upgrading .
