Update-Manager Error in 12.04 LTS

I try to update Ubuntu software and I get an error message that reads:

"E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_universe_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened."

Also the software center does not open due to this error.

Error occurred after attempting to install Stellarium. The "precise_universe_binary-i386" label seems to be a component of this installation package.

Please advise. Sorry, not an experienced Ubuntu user so I don't really know how this error occurred or what I can do to reverse it.

for the first error , follow the steps answered in the following link

as for the 2nd error .. do

sudo apt-get clean

sudo apt-get purge stellarium

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get --fix-missing install

sudo apt-get install stellarium

then see how it goes.
