how to upgrade to ubuntu 12.04 without loosing my files

Asked by joel paz cavazos

When I upgraded the last time to ubuntu 11.10 I lost all my files. Now I get a notice that ubuntu has a new 12.04 upgrade and I suppose I should upgrade. But what must I do in order that I don't loose all my files.

Basically you need to make certain everything you need is fully backed up. Upgrades are safe most of the time. If anything goes wrong during the upgrade process you will lose data. A power failure for example will almost guarantee problems.

How do I back it up?

Copy all the data you need to a USB stick or a DVD or backup to a cloud such a dropbox or UbuntuOne. You should be backing data up regulary. Most of us take two different backups and refresh them daily. Hard drives fail catastrophically sometimes with no warning.
