Asked by doug

I tried to do the update to Ubuntu 12. It failed half the way through, and my sompuiter locked up. I turned the computer off. Now I can even get booted up in Ubuntu. I am running a recovery but its taking days. LAst I checked it was on line 100 ?? Did I loose all my photos and family videos? How to I fix? I have Windows 7 on the same PC. Can I at least find the photos and video in WIndows? Please if anyone can help!!

Run the live-CD - boot from it and use 'Try Ubuntu'. If this works you should be able to get to all your stuff. If not, you will have your backups somewhere safe I presume. If you are using a wubi installation it is not that simple. Please give information.

I created a bootable usb stick with 11.10 as the GUI. 12.04 would have worked also. I booted in 11.10, installed it and sellecte the option of installation but keeping old files and what no. It WORKED! I recovered all my personal files!. Next I made a bootable usb stick for 12.04 and finished the upgrade. Everything works fine! I love this O.S.! (Ububtu 12.04 that is..)
