Our upgrade to ubuntu 12 was interrupted; now the computer won't boot up

Asked by Shoshana Kaminsky

I accidentally shut down our laptop while upgrading to ubuntu version 12. Now the computer is unable to boot up. I've attempted restart in safe modes, but it's clear that I will just need to install the operating system from a usb or some other external driver.

You may be able to boot to root recovery mode and run:

sudo fuser -vki /var/lib/dpkg/lock;sudo dpkg --configure -a

If not, use a chroot from liveCD and use the same command

Thanks so much for the quick reply. I tried one recovery mode, but may try others to see if they work. This laptop doesn't have a CD drive, so I would need to get an external version on usb to reload the operating system. Do you have a link where I can download the program?

You can make a bootable USB stick and boot that

Download the DVD iso from the main Ubuntu website and use one of several tools to put it onto a USB. Startup disk creator is the one supplied with Ubuntu and is usually pretty good. There are also usb boot creation tools available for Windows. Ubuntu doesn't offer a usb image specifically.

Hi

I recently purchased a product from eBay.

It is called ACRS Boot Disc.

This is designed to work with Microsoft Windows and Linux Operating Systems.

It might be worth contacting the Seller for advice.

Hope this helps you.

Kind Regards

Alan
