update issues and no system icons at top right

Asked by mark

i updated from 11.x (cant remember exactly which version) to 12.04 LTS and i have lost the ability to see the wireless, user name, and ppower icons on the upper right corner. i had em with the last version, and now i dont. any ideas on a fix for this????

also i cant update anything. i dont have access to the update manager, or any thing else for that matter. cant access anything in teh program area in the launcher on the left. this is all on an old Dell Inspiron 9200. i am not a programmer or even really that in tune with Ubuntu, i am more of a windows user so this is weird for me. i could try reinstalling from a disk but i dont know if that would help.

i want to say 11.04 but i am not 100% positive. its been a month or so since i used said computer, i usually use my desktop or a netbook, and when i booted it up on saturday 4/28, the update manager said there was an upgrade. so i did it. now nothing seems to work like it should.

Then you have leapfrogged a release, you must upgrade 11.04 to 11.10, then upgrade 11.10 to 12.04.

I recommend a clean install of Precise and restore user data from your backups.

If you log in as a new user, is it ok there?

Hi Mark,

I am sure, that your icons are still there, but you will just need to refresh them. Please, run this commang below in terminal and all problems should have to gone:

gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist "['all']"

Regards,
Miha
