Upgrade 11.10 to 12.04 on Acer L100

Asked by John Barrett

I have successfully upgraded 11.10 to 12.04 on a HP Mini 1000 netbook and on a couple of desktops (one AMD and PATA, the other Intel and SATA), but when I attempted to upgrade my Acer L100 the system shutdown near the end of the upgrade and now refuses to boot. It flashes the blank screen (backlit then not backlit) and finally shows a text message in the upper left of the screen: "* Checking battery state. . ." and "[ OK ]" in the upper right corner. I'm not surprized that I can't boot since the system shut itself off during the upgrade, but I am wondering what could have caused the shutoff. I thought about a thermal shutdown, but the system doesn't seem to overheat when I have it running in "setup" and am monitoring the CPU and ambient temperatures.
I guess I'll have to make an install DVD and start over, but I would like to understand what caused the problem in the first place.

The Acer Aspire L100 has almost everything built into the motherboard -- certainly the graphics.

It's really about the graphics chipset. You were asked this because there have been known issues with certain nvidia graphics systems - both onboard and separate.

I'll try to find a working L100 and see what graphics chipset is used.

NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE is shown as the "display adapter" in Windows 7 running on an "identical" acer aspire L100.

I have some more information. I attempted to install 11.04 from a CD and it also failed near the end of the installation -- even though I had installed from the same CD on this same L100 earlier in the year -- so I assumed that I had a hardware problem. However, on a whim, I took the hard drive out of the L100 and put it in another system which supported SATA. I was able to successfully install 11.04 and then upgrade to 11.10 and then upgrade to 12.04. I then put the harddrive back in the L100. After a little bit of using shift and enter keys I was able to bring up 12.04 on the L100 and, in fact, I am using the L100 to write this note. So there appears to be a problem during installation that is not present once installation is finished?? I am certainly confused, but I'm happy to have my L100 working again. I know that this will be a very low priority issue now that I found a workaround of sorts, but I still would like to understand what is going on.

What happens if you boot from the DVD and choose the 'Try Ubuntu' option?

With the 11.04 CD in place and the bios set to boot from CD first, the system runs long enough to show the Ubuntu screen with the red/white dots for about a minute, then when I would expect to see the choice of trying or installing Ubuntu, the computer shutsdown abruptly. When I restart and manage to remove the CD so that I boot from the 12.04 harddrive, it works fine.
