no new release found

Asked by Ted C

In Update Manager I am not offered a version update. The 'software source' is set to main and 'new release' is set to normal.

I've tried 'do-release-upgrade'

ted@ted-netbook:~$ lsb_release -a
LSB Version: core-2.0-ia32:core-2.0-noarch:core-3.0-ia32:core-3.0-noarch:core-3.1-ia32:core-3.1-noarch:core-3.2-ia32:core-3.2-noarch:core-4.0-ia32:core-4.0-noarch
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 11.04
Release: 11.04
Codename: natty
ted@ted-netbook:~$ sudo do-release-upgrade
[sudo] password for ted:
Checking for a new ubuntu release
No new release found
ted@ted-netbook:~$

Any suggestions?

Try:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

make sure all your important data is backed up first!

I actually recommend you download an burn the ISO to either a CD or a USB stick. You can now run the upgrade right from the LIveCD and it will much quicker, plus you will also have the correct boot device if you need to fix it or re-install.

sudo update-manager -d

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Gets me -

Calculating upgrade... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

sudo update-manager -d

Gets me -

No new release found

So neither helps - This is the second or third time this has happened. Other upgrades I'v given up and have done full installs of the new version.

Thanks

If you've opened update manager and the updates have just been done, and you've got 'check for new releases' set to "normal releases" then under where it says "Package information was updated less than 1 hour ago" it will have another section that says "new release 11.10 is available". Next to it should be a button "Upgrade"

Seriously though, it will only upgrade you to 11.10, not 12.04. You'll then have to upgrade again to get to 12.04. I suggest the best thing to do would be to download the iso for 12.04. You should then do a clean install after backing up your data. It might not be necessary to restore the data if you use the advanced partitioner ("do something else" when it asks if you want to use the whole disk) to specify the / partition and you do NOT tick the box to format the partition.

You should still back up all your important data however - if you lose everything you won't be the first person to do so. You Will lose everhthing if you:
* format the partition
* Select "use entire drive"
* The intaller crashes and corrupts the partition

Once you've got the iso downloaded:

If you do install 12.04 but are using the same /home/username directory that you where with Natty 11.04 you may find that Unity dash will not show any programs or files. This is a compatibility problem with Zeitgeist when going from 11.04 straight to 12.04. It is easily fixed by deleting the zeigeist database with
rm ~/.local/share/zeitgeist/activity.sqlite
and reboot.

I tried yet another 'clean install' with a backup in place so recovery of the main components of data was possible ...

Now gone back to 11.04.
