Ok to upgrade to 12.04?

Currently using 11.10 and upgrading to 12.04 is available in my update manager.
If I do this will my vlc still play dvd/cd's? I had to do a lot of tweaking to override codes etc,I don't want that again. Also, will I get a new display as I somehow lost chunks of background color before and have skeletal basic black lines in the top toolbar and dropdowns.
Would appreciate some assurance before I press 'upgrade'.Thanks.

Should be fine, always run a full backup before kicking it off
