Computer locked in middle of Ubuntu update

Asked by Nicole Tucker

I was downloading the most recent Ubuntu release saying that the version I was running on was outdated - it was going to take a couple of hours to finish so I left my laptop open and went to do other things. Later, I closed my computer without checking to see if it was done- I'd forgotten the reason for leaving it open. When I opened it again, it showed me the windows I'd last had open, but wouldn't respond. I left it there for a short while (5-10 minutes) and no luck, so I (cringe to say it) forced a shut-down. I turned it back on and logged in to my account. It showed me my desktop but without the top or bottom bars. I hit ctrl-alt-del and asked it to restart and same thing.

I called my brother the techie geek and alt-F1 doesn't do anything, alt-right click doesn't do anything, and he had me go into ctrl-alt-F1 and put in sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and sudo apt-get update and gconftool recursive unset apps panel and a few others including pkill gnome panel and was telling me he'd have to look at it in person.

Is there anything else I can try before I have to surrender my sweetheart to my brother? He's a busy guy and I don't want to bog him down.

Thanks for your help!
Nikki

Yes, I asked for the output, not your interpretation.

Copy and paste the text and paste here as an update

Thanks

Okay. Remarkably, my computer has fixed itself. I waited until the upgrade window popped back up and I clicked to begin the upgrade. It took almost 2 hours, but was able to install everything I needed and restart itself. I am now running on the new Ubuntu. I have always been a Windows lover, but since getting my netbook, I'd had blue screens repeatedly and I was strongly persuaded into using Linux and Ubuntu. I have had one blue screen since switching a year ago (which fixed itself after a restart) and have never had a problem since. From a dedicated Windows lover - HERE, HERE!
