"Manual" method of Ubuntu release upgrade

Asked by Bob Bib

Is anything wrong with the following "manual upgrade method"?

1) change all references from one release to another (e. g., "natty" -> "precise") in /etc/apt/sources.list
2) apt-get update
3) apt-get dist-upgrade

Can it be an alternative to the usual 'update-manager' and 'do-release-upgrade' methods?

Its not the way to do upgrades which is WHY there is an app to do it. If this was how it is done then it would be a lot simpler.

Your method also skips Oneirc which is not supported. You NEED to upgrade to Oneiric first, then to Precise or you will get issues.

Persoanally I would clean install Precise so you don't have the old fluff from the old releases possibly causing issues. Nice clean LTS install as it is intended :)

"not the way" and "NEED" are not arguments, these are fallacies.
