10.04 crash during update - 0 space - can't boot - help

Asked by dale francis

I was using update manager - I don't remember a space warning.
It froze and said there was 0 space left.
The only way to do anything was to shut down. When I tried to boot back up. I get

drive for UUID=74cac29-968f-4156-8447-c46fc38bc03 is not ready or not present

Then the following in the upper right of screen

Install problem, The configuration defaults for GNOME Power Management have not been installed correctly. please contact your computer administrator.

After trying many times to get past this and complete a boot up, I have done the following:
I created a 10.04 live session USB, changed the drive boot sequence to boot from it>

It boots up. I can see the main drive and its files and folders. I can not move or delete anything however, and don't seem to be able to change the user or add a new user.

I need some files which I can not now recover (primarily evolution mail files) and a few documents.

Any help would be appreciated

I( suggest you chroot to the installed OS and free up space. This can be done by uninstalling old unused kernels and also uninstalling libreoffice (Which can be reinstalled later). You can also run:

sudo apt-get clean

To free up more space. Here is a guide for chrooting:
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/09/live-usb-sticking-grub-2-video/

You will be chrooted after you use the chroot command.

Sorry for the delay. I'm a pastor and was called away on an emergency and am just getting back at this.

Yes. Ubuntu is installed on /dev/sda

I will try the DataRecovery suggested by Jeet and the chroot suggested by actionparsnip as I have time today. Thanks for the suggestions.

I appreciate all the suggestions. I was still having trouble getting access to files on the drive, so I did the following (not sure the best, but it worked):
1. I downloaded a live Ubuntu 10.04 onto a flash drive using another computer.
2. I could use it to boot my laptop, could see the laptop drive, but still couldn't manipulate the files in any way.
3. I tried to add a user to the live Ubuntu, but didn't see how.
4. Since my laptop had both a SDHC slot & USB slot, I used the flash drive to install 10.04 on the SDHC card (8GB).
5. I then used the SDHC card to boot the laptop and added a user with the same name and password as the locked up version on the laptop. That gave me full access to the files on the laptop.
6. I copied all the /.evolution files to the appropriate place on the SDHC.
7. I tested the evolution application using the SDHC version & backed up the files.
8. I then used the flash drive to reinstall 10.04 on the laptop.
--
9. A benefit of this solution is that I now have a second functional 10.04 which will be easy to keep current with the laptop, and which can even be used on another computer in a pinch. I have also set u a simple way to sync all my other data files.
--
Again thanks for your help. If you have comments on my approach, let me know.
