i suggest you to not upgrade your release to 10.10, wait the incoming (end of april) Ubuntu 12.04.

By the way you can directly update your 10.04 to 12.04 unstable release.

If you want to try 12.04 now in beta1 unstable release you can do it... please (backup your relevant data before to upgrade)
then try this terminal command:

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

then to upgrade 10.04 to 12.04 unstable press alt + f2 then type:

update-manager -d

and press enter...

To answer to your original question:

Ubuntu 10.04 in its default settings is set to upgrade itself when an LTS release is available (12.04 LTS)

Changing the settings you can update 10.04 to 11.10 (i not suggest to do it).

i don,t want to upgrade as you meet all the same problems with newer operating systems, i just want to update the items i already have,

Can you help with this problem?
