update-manager package

Bus errorackage lists... 0% during apt-get operations -> update manager wont start

getting a bus error. whatever that is. Update manager wont start as well as other things. I have tried the following from Terminal. I'm not real computer literate.

[sudo] password for hdlr85:

A bus error is an internal error in the program, when it attempts to grab some resource (eg memory address) that does not have access to.

try
sudo mv /var/lib/dpkg/available /var/lib/dpkg/available.backup

Failing this, try removing/moving some files that apt uses. If you have the strace utility installed, use that to locate where it is crashing run:

sudo su
strace apt-get update > /home/hdlr85/trace-output.txt
chown hdlr85:users /home/hdlr85/trace-output.txt
exit

then upload the "trace-out to ubuntu paste bin at http://paste.ubuntu.com/.
