In general upgrading from one version of Ubuntu to the next does not lose any thing. But things do occasionally go wrong and even If you are not upgrading you should make sure you have a good set of backups.

Odds are that everything will go fine however.

Before I do a distribution upgrade I usually create a CD and run from the CD to check everything works. I have been lucky but some people have had problems with Internet or sound so for the cost of a CD its worth the effort.

I then check my backups are in order and upgrade. I have never needed the backups yet on any of my Ubuntu machines. Wish I could say the same for my Windows boxes.

that depends on what you mean by updating.

if you already have ver 10.04 and just want to download and install the updates, then you won't lose anything.

if you're using an older version and want to install 10.04, yes, you will lose everything if you don't have a separate /home directory. if this is what you're doing, you'll need to copy everything you want to keep to a CD or separate partion before you install 10.04. an alternative is to move /home to it's own partition. if this is what you want to do, just google "move /home to its own partition" and follow the instructions there.

Can you help with this problem?
