Jaunty is EOL (End of life) so there are no repos for it to get any updates from . I suggest you update to at least Lucid (10.04) which you will need to upgrade to Karmic first. Alternatively you can install a clean install of Oneiric and restore your user data from backup. This will get you to the newest stable release and faster.

Yes, you can, though it is not the recommended way (it may fail, but it may also work):

You can but its long and old configs may cause issues.
