Aborted upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10

Asked by G Siron

Been on 11.04 since April, upgrading regularly. Tried upgrading to 11.10 this morning. Everything downloaded okay. While the packages were installing, one error came up for initramfs. No indication that this would be catastrophic. Upgrade proceeded until nearly the end before announcing upgrade would be aborted and that previous system would be restored. After closing all windows and rebooting, the computer was unbootable from the fixed disk - even attempting to load previous linux versions got nowhere. Now I am running 11.04 from the CD, wondering if the aborted 11.10 upgrade on the disks can be rescued, or whether I should reinstall 11.04 and give up on any more Ubuntu versions before it drives me insane.

You can boot to liveCD and chroot to the install and reinstate the boot loader and reinstall the kernel package to make things square off.

Thank you for answer. Won't get a chance to try it, because out of exasperation, partner went ahead and installed and re-partioned the disk from 11.04 LiveCD.

What happened next was interesting. Before loading up any optional software, we upgraded using the Update Manager to 11.10. This time there were no error messages at all during the upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10. It all appeared to install smoothly UNTIL the system was re-booted. It blank-screened, and continued to do so whenever trying to boot 11.10. However it did manage to boot 11.10 if I used the previous Linux version (the kernel that came with 11.04).

By this time we were so fed up with our user experience (we never liked ver 11 anyway because of the interface even after using it for 6 months), we decided to go back to Lucid Lynx 10.04 LTS (long term support version).

I used to believe that if you upgraded regularly using the update Manager to the latest version, you were doing the best thing. I don't believe that anymore.

Can you help with this problem?
