upgrade to 11.10 from 11.04 64bit died

Asked by crazyputer

Yesterday I tried to upgrade both of my Ubuntu 11.04 systems to 11.10 one 64bit the other 32bit.
The 32bit system upgraded great but the 64bit system is now dead. I can reboot the system with a 10.04 CD but then can get to any files on my system.
I was busy doing other things yesterday so I didn't observe the upgraded fully, I noticed it had some problems I thought it said these would be solved with a restart but it didn't solve and the system is dead.

System description
CPU
AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Six Core 9MB 2.8GHz Turbo AM3
Motherboard
Gigabyte GA-880GM-USB3 - VGA onboard
RAM
2 x Adata 2GB DDR3 1333 DIMM
HDD
WD Caviar Greenpower 1TB 64MB 3.5" SATA2 HDD
ODD
LG DVD RW
BTC DVD RW

This system has been very good and reliable for 16 months only running Ubuntu starting with 10.04 and upgrading with every upgrade & every update as soon as I notice they are available. I use the system everyday averaging 6hrs per day.

I have tried to get the system into safe mode to try to find out more information it doesn't even give me a menu.

The 32bit kids computer is working great.

I have thought maybe I will need to backup the HDD on to the kids computer them reinstalling 10.04 then upgrade to 11.10 again, this doesn't appeal due to the downloading and time to rebuild the system.

I am trying to use my wife's Windows 7 Laptop to create a installation disk then trying to reboot using that.

Boot to root recovery console (with networking) and run:

sudo apt-get -f install

if all is well, run:

su foo; sudo startx

change foo for your username. eg:

su andy; sudo startx

I would try this but the system will not accept any commands and will not allow me to goto the recovery console

Hold shift at boot, do you get the grub menu, you can choose netroot from the recovery mode there. Or is this not possible?
