how to upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10

Asked by Muhammad Umar Ibrahim

I downloaded and burned 11.10 cd for a fresh install.but despite of showing splash screen it shows some lines and don't proceed to the installation menu.i have install it successfully in vm ware with same cd with means there is no problem in installation files of burned cd.
can anyone have any idea about that problem.
or how can i upgrate 11.04 to 11.10 from installation disk.when i select upgrade option from upgrade manager it starts downloading it again.how to set it to use 11.10 CD for up gradation?

You can do an upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 with the 'alternate' CD, but not with the 'desktop' CD.

If you download the 'alternate' CD and burn it to a CD or loop mount the .iso file you will find a cdromupgrade script in it to perform the release upgrade.
(Note that additional updates amounting to some 100 MB will have to be downloaded in any case.)

however it should start the normal installation.... u are covered with manfred's response but better use the upgrade mode if u have to download the alternate cd so u will avoid the additional updates

Another option would be to let ubuntu update its self completely over the internet

simply enter

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

and enter your password

probably something with your hardware.... for example missing gfx drivers (on that cause u must install from a non-graphical installation from 'alternate' cd)

if u have solved your problem based on the following answers please mark the question as "solved"
if u still have a problem u must tell as what those lines that apear say....

thanks
