Update from Lucid to Natty Failed...Need help

Asked by shuukazedojo

I've been running Lucid successfully for a while now but felt the need to update. I went through the Update manager and installed Meerkat. This was fine. Following the same procedure I attempted an install of 11.04 but am getting an error.

When I boot, I get a purple Ubuntu screen followed by flashes of black. Eventually this loads into some kind of terminal-like screen where the last bit of dialogue is:

/dev/sda7: clean, 350190/9076736 files, 31186556/36276762 blocks
*Stopping Userspace bootsplash [OK]
*Stopping Flush boot log to disk [OK]
*Enabling additional executable binary formats binfmt-support [OK]
No apache MPM package installed
*Checking battery state... [OK]

How do I fix this??? I am unfamiliar with the commands from here. I would like to either restore the previous update or fix Natty. What are the solutions?

THANK YOU in advance!!!

Reinstall gnome-power-manager in root recovery mode, may help. If you use proprietary drivers then uninstall those and it should be ok and you can then reinstall them

How exactly is that done from the command line? I have no GUI (which is what I'm familiar with, of course).

sudo apt-get --reinstall install gnome-power-manager

I typed that and hit enter. Absolutely nothing happens. To clarify, this is before entering my UN and PW.

You must execute the above command after login to your system means after entering UN and PW.

@bhaskar: That's the problem. It doesn't give me the option to enter my UN and PW. I don't know how to get into the system

I decided to try booting in recovery mode. After getting to the menu I chose to continue regular boot. It gave me a UN and PW prompt. After logging in, I entered the code from above. It reinstalled and appeared successful. I restarted and tried to boot normally with similar results. I'm back at the same screen. It doesn't send me to the normal login screen. Thoughts? Solutions?

Reinstall of Lucid has me happy again. Updates should not do this and is a huge issue for Ubuntu becoming more accessible to a broader market. I hope to see this kind of thing fixed in the future. In any case, I appreciate everyone's help!!!
